Concentrates 101


Popularity and demand for concentrates have increased dramatically over the past couple of years. Concentrates have high potency which allow medical patients to achieve fast relief. Concentrates are a great option for consumers looking to increase the intensity and taste the most exquisite terpene profiles. Dabbing is the most popular way to consume marijuana concentrates which simply refers to the vaporization and consumption of marijuana concentrates. Shatter has a hard, smooth, glass-like consistency. This consistency of extract breaks easily into shards and is often referred to as being 'stable'. Shatter is typically translucent and sometimes transparent, concentrate that’s made by forcing butane through cannabis material. Many prefer to dab shatter as it can be difficult to load into certain vaporizers.

Pro Tip: For easier handling, warm the tip of your dabber before sticking it into the shatter to break off a dab.




Wax or budder refers to cannabis extracts with a creamy, buttery consistency. It is also called crumble. It starts out being an amber liquid produced by butane extraction. That liquid is heated up to produce an opaque, almost gooey substance that has a consistency that ranges from thick peanut butter to soft wax.

Pro Tip: Budder can be vaped or dabbed. Make sure to activate the wax prior to combining with your oil or butter.


Live Resin


Live resin is made the same way as wax, however the starting product is fresh frozen plant material. By using cryogenically preserved plant material, the finished product has exceptional terpene and cannabinoid profiles that resemble the qualities of the live plant. Terpene preservation is the primary reason for “live” concentrates being made from “fresh frozen” plant material. This also explains why we keep “live” concentrates and most concentrates refrigerated. When left out at room temperature, the heat and exposure to oxygen will change the terpene composition of the product.

Pro Tip: Cannabis consumers who focus on terpenes and their medical efficacy gravitate toward live resin because it preserves the terpene profile of the plant. As terpenes are exposed to heat (thermal degradation) and oxygen (oxidation), they change in many ways. Their molecular structure changes, often resulting in higher and lower levels of certain terpenes, effectively changing the smell and taste. These different levels of various terpenes result in different modulating effects on the body in conjunction with the cannabinoids that are present. 



Live Sugar

Sugar is the word used to describe shatter that has begun to resemble the consistency of wet sand while not completely drying out into crumble. After cannabis resin is extracted with a solvent, the oils are then heated to “purge” or evaporate out the solvent from the plant oils. Sugar forms during the heating process and can be a result of fats (lipids) that have not been properly extracted while making a shatter.
